As a retired secondary ed teacher, I cannot tell you how many students I watched suffer during the 3 1/2 decades that I was in that field. Many kids were bullied, whispered about, and treated as second class citizens because of a health issue that was untreated. I saw many girls with classic signs of PCOS and boys who were called lazy. While most students who had type 1 diabetes were always receiving extra care and concern, those who clearly were suffering with type 2 had no help, but were discriminated against. It hurt my heart because I was constantly battling my weight, as well. I’m so happy to see that doctors are beginning to treat our youth!
My 14 year old has been on for over a year and it is the best decision we’ve ever made. Her mental health is in a better place than it’s ever been…a year ago she was self harming and on an extremely high dose of Prozac and now that Prozac has been cut in half and we’ve been self harming free since last May. Her confidence is beautiful, she’s not isolating anymore and went from failing every class to high honors (straight As) this entire school year. With all that, she is down 35 pounds and isn’t bullied for her weight anymore. I wish people could look deeper and see, especially in teens, how life changing this can truly be. I would have given anything for the opportunity to know my obesity was never my fault and have found a solution much sooner ❤️
I have 3 kids. When they were children they all ate the same foods. My youngest, while not eating anymore than the others started gaining extra weight as a toddler. Being a registered nurse I did all things in the medical arsenal available for children - diets, treated at the U of MN childhood obesity program, naltrexone, antidepressant, dietician, personal training, gym memberships, endocrinologist put him on metformin which literally made him ill. Nothing worked. Out of desperation he had a gastric sleeve done in 2018. Sadly he gained back most all that he lost. Now at 29 years old and treating with Tirzepatide he is finally free of the food noise and metabolic dysfunction that has been controlling his life. He has lost 75lbs so far and is the happiest I've ever seen him. If GLP-1's had been available when he was a kid I would have put him on it without hesitation. It would have saved him years and years of misery, feeling like a failure, and being bullied that could have easily been avoided. So for me, I say yes for children and it's about damn time there is a real solution!
My daughter is 9 and has seen my struggles through surgery and both major GLP 1 medications and is already making comments wondering if it would help her stop being hungry. Shes been a zombie to hunger her entire life at just 9. If I can help her in a few years to not get to my highest weight im going to be all in on it for her. I hear the same words come out of her mouth that dominated my thoughts for more than 40 years. I can't sentence her to that price when there is a medically proven effective solution for so many including me.
My 16 year old has been successful with Wegovy for the past 5 months. He was initally 280lbs and 6'1 with weight increasing. He became pre diabetic and started have hypertension. His bad cholesterol levels were increasing. As a parent, this frightened me as he is so young to have these conditions. His pediatrician offered him to see a weight loss specialist connected with the childrens hospital. His weight-loss provider saw us for several sessions and provided education anout options that he couldctry. She didn't rush us, she listened. She offered Wegovy and we thpight about it and he tried it. Fast forward, and he has lost 35lbs and counting. He no longer has hypertension nor is he pre diabetic. His labs are now perfect. He is happy and so am I. He looks healthier and he grew another inch to 6'2". Childhood obesity definitely needs to be discussed. If not, our children who will soon become adults will suffer what we as adults have endured for so long. I'm thankful insurance has covered his med. I hope it continues. I see the teenagers in his school who can benefit from a glp1 med. I just hope we as adults take advantage of this life saving opportunity for our children.
Yes please help these children and adolescents! If I could go back in a Time Machine and give my own child-self shots, I would do it in a heartbeat. They’re suffering from the same crap we all are and if we can make that suffering stop, it’s criminal not to do it.
